Cape Town to Franschhoek by car is 72 km from Cape Town International Airport, about an hour without traffic or stops, and a hire car from Cape Town Airport never has to go into the city first. The direct route runs on the N1 and the R45; the slower way goes through Stellenbosch and over the Helshoogte Pass. Rental cars may use only paved public roads.

Can I see Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl in one day?
By road, yes: a loop from CPT to Stellenbosch, over the pass to Franschhoek, on to Paarl and back to the airport is 152 km, about 2 h 25 of driving without traffic or stops, with the legs at 35 km, 32 km, 29 km and 56 km. The loop alone uses 152 km of your selected car's allowance, and a loop through Hermanus instead makes 269 km. Include any other driving when checking whether the allowance covers your plans. The rest of the day is for the towns. If you plan to taste wine, have a designated driver: the legal limit is 0.05 g of alcohol per 100 ml of blood and is under review, after the Department of Transport announced in January 2026 a process to amend the law and scrap the legal alcohol limit. The safe rule is not to drink at all before driving.
What do I need to hire the car?
The licence and card a hire car needs are the same for a Winelands day as for any rental in South Africa: a valid national driving licence with its details in Latin script, valid to the last day of the rental, never a copy or an electronic licence, plus an International Driving Permit if your licence is valid only at home. Bring the card the booking names; some cars need a physical embossed credit card in the main driver's name. The minimum driver age is on each car's page.
Can I carry on to Hermanus from Franschhoek?
Yes. The R45 and then the R43 take you from Franschhoek to Hermanus in 94 km, about 1 h 20, and the drive on to Hermanus and back to CPT, 103 km more, makes a loop of 269 km from CPT. Most of the Franschhoek to Hermanus leg is on the R43, 49 km of it, with 25 km on the R45 and 10 km on Draaiberg Road.

What costs are on me during the day?
Fuel, parking, fines and tolls are the driver's cost. The car goes back with the fuel level it had at pick-up; a lower level is charged at the rental company's rates and a higher one is not refunded.
What are the speed limits in the Winelands?
The general limit is 60 km/h in towns such as Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, 100 km/h on the roads between them, and 120 km/h where the N1 is a freeway, unless a sign sets another. Every adult in the car wears a seatbelt where one is fitted, and South Africa drives on the left.
Is there a longer drive inland from the Winelands?
Paarl is one of the member towns of the Route 62 road trip, which continues inland through towns such as Worcester, Robertson and Montagu to Oudtshoorn, 417 km from CPT, about 5 h 20 without traffic or stops. The R62 section of that drive runs about 244 km, and George Airport is 63 km beyond Oudtshoorn.
